I write to ask for your attention to the recent arrest of three American citizens and democracy activists by the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

I write to ask for your attention to the recent arrest of three American citizens and democracy activists by the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
On March 14, 2011, Ms. Jennifer Truong, Mr. Nguyen Ly Trong, and Mr. Nguyen Quang Khanh participated in a peaceful demonstration along with aggrieved Vietnamese citizens who have gathered in front of the government office in Saigon to decry government corruption and illegal expropriation of property when they were swept up by Vietnamese security police.
Ms. Jennifer Truong is a resident of Fountain Valley, California and is a single mother with a 17-year old daughter in high school. She reported on the protest in interviews with Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Radio Free Asia and Radio New Horizon shortly before her arrest. Mr. Nguyen Ly Trong (Trong L. Nguyen) is a resident of San Bernardino, California. He is married with three children. Mr. Nguyen Quang Khanh (Khanh Q. Nguyen) is a resident of Centennial, Colorado. He has a daughter who lives in Washington DC and a son currently serving in the U.S. Air Force.
After being held for one week, Mr. Nguyen Ly Trong was released and returned home on March 21st. The whereabouts and well-being of Jennifer Truong and Nguyen Quanh Khanh are stlll unknown.
All three activists are members of Viet Tan or the Vietnam Reform Party, a pro-democracy party with members among the diaspora and within Vietnam. Viet Tan aims to bring about democratic change through peaceful means. They have not done anything wrong other than exercising their basic human rights as prescribed in the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Vietnam is a signatory.
As your constituent, I respectfully request:
– Your office to inquiry with the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, and the U.S. Consulate General in Saigon regarding the status of the two detained American citizens;
– To join other senators in writing a letter to Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to requesting for their immediate release. I understand that the office of Senator Barbara Boxer had initiated a letter on this matter.
