Added Note From A Reader: I was in the US Navy and I pulled Shore Patrol here. I was assigned with two gendarmes (French Policemen). They both had semi automatic sidearms and semi automatic rifles over their shoulder. I was there to keep American military out of the entire area and the gendarmes to keep out all civilians. The only people we met were tourists who inadvertently drifted into the area and pleaded with us to escort them to safety. This was the worse shore patrol I ever experienced and I wished I had something better to protect myself than a six inch wooden club.
